The new Tipping Legislation from the 1st October 2024.
From 1st October 2024, the Government introduced new legislation (a ‘bill’) to protect workers in the service industry who may be given tips.
The bill is called The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023. The new rules ensure that all workers must be given their tips in full and promptly. Employers cannot ‘hive’ off management fees and then give staff reduced tips.
In fact, if employers are seen to be interfering, at all, then they face real problems and would almost certainly lose some taxation benefits.
There are a number of detailed rules, but in short, you need to make sure:
You receive all of the tips that are given to/for you.
You shouldn’t be forced to share your tips with others (if you haven’t agreed).
You should receive your tips timely.
